Q. What are Literary Fairy Tales?
A. Literary Fairy Tales are stories that carry a certain characteristic set of symbols and motifs, but which, unlike their sibling folk tales, are written by an individual. For a more in-depth definition, you may wish to refer to the recently published "Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales: The Western fairy tale tradition from medieval to modern." Also, see author/illustrator/editor Terri Windling's web site, The Endicott Studio.

Q. What does Maia photograph?
A. Mostly Mama Earth. All images on this site* are photographed and/or designed by Maia; you can also visit a small gallery of Maia's work here at LittleFolkTales.

* with the exceptions of the book covers in the Spirited Review and the above photograph of Maia, taken by her husband, photographer Kevin Cheli-Colando.

Q. What is new on this site?
A. The
Gallery Sea has finally begun. If you want to know when new pieces are posted there, you can add yourself to the mail list. There are a few new websites listed on the links page, and more to come!

At the Spirited Review of Earth and Literature, there is now a program resource guide for parents and educators, derived from my monthly Nature Story Time presentations at the Humboldt State University's Natural History Museum.
